B. Chandrasekaran

Prof. Dr. B. Chandrasekaran is Director, Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Aduthurai. He completed his B.Sc. (Ag.) (1975), M.Sc.(Ag) (1977) and Ph. D (1989) at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore. He has served at TNAU in various positions for a period of 26 years in the areas of Research, Teaching, Extension, Management and Administration. His major fields of specialization are Water Management and Integrated Farming System practices. He is Pioneer in the establishment of Plant Clinic Centre at Tamirabarani river basin, large scale introduction of direct sown rice system in Union Territory of Pondicherry and large scale demonstration on farm mechanization with Ipomoea cutter, Paddy transplanter, Reaper and Combined harvester in Cauvery Delta Zone. He headed Soil and Water Management Research Institute, (SWMRI) Thanjavur for five years and Plant Clinic Centre, Tirunelveli for three years. He has taught Agronomy courses for the Undergraduates, Post graduates and Doctoral scholars. He has guided two Masters’ and four Doctoral scholars. He served as a resource person for more than 115 farm and scientific seminars. He has completed more than 17 research schemes, 54 research sub projects, 38 adaptive multi location and operational research projects. He has published more than 126 research papers and eleven books. He is life member of eight professional societies and member in 23 reputed research bodies and journals in National and International level. He is a recipient of various fellowships from International organization viz., Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), Rome; International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Philippines; Asian Productivity Organization (APO), Japan; International Bibliography Institute (IBI), USA. He received “Bharathiar Award” for the publication of best Tamil book on Rice Production, Best Research paper award from Indian Society of Agronomy, New Delhi and “Best Agronomist Award” from Makkal Sakthi Iyakkam awarded by Cauvery Delta Zone farmers for his significant contributions for the rice farming. He has participated in World Rice Research Conference during 2004 at Japan. He served as coordinator for World Bank scheme on Water Resources Reconsolidation Project – IRRI Agricultural Intensification Programme in TNAU. He is an active member of Irrigated Rice Research Consortium (IRRC), which works for reversing the declining rice productivity and to reach optimum productivity operating at International level. He attended the IRRC review meet at IRRI, Philippines during 2004. Research accomplishments numbering 7 varieties and 28 technologies have been taken to farmers’ fields for adoption and the technologies are being included in the Crop Production Guide of the Tamil Nadu State Government.
