Prof. (Dr.) B.S. Paliwal - a versatile Professor of Geology has made significant contribution to diversified fields of Geology, right from the Precambrian Tectonics and Deformation to Basin Evolution and Stratigraphy, Palaeontology, Sedimentlogy, Hydrogeology, Quaternary Sediments and Meteoritics. His work on the Precambrians of India has received appreciation. Prof. Paliwal's discovery of Elephant fossils from the Thar Desert received recognition from the scientific fraternity. Prof. Paliwal's discovery of life forming amino-acids from the 4.52 G.a. old. Didwana – Rajod meteorite and his ideas of “the extra-terrestrial origin of life and its transportation on the earth by meteorites and comets” and “the impact of extra-terrestrial bodies caused the evolution of life and its mass extinction on the earth” raised curiosity in the scientific community. He was associated with IGCP-269-SEDBA (Chairman of the South Asia) and IGCP-440. Prof. Paliwal visited several countries: USSR, Germany, U.K., Russia, China, France, Italy, Austria, Thailand, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Spain, Egypt, Japan, Kenya, Somalia, U.A.E. Switzerland and U.S.A. in connection with research work. Prof. Paliwal was invited to Chair Sessions in several International Geological Congresses (27th IGC-1984, Moscow, USSR; 29th IGC -1992, Kyoto; 32nd IGC-2004, Florence, Italy and 33rd IGC -2008, Oslo, Norway); 12th International Sedimentological Congress-1986, Canberra (Australia);  GEOSOM-1987, Mogadishu (Somalia); GEOSAS–I, 1992, Islamabad (Pakistan); GEOSAS-II, 1995, Colombo (Sri Lanka); Assembly and Breakup of Rodinia and Growth of Asia-2001, Irkutsk, Siberia, (Russia) and Osaka (Japan) in 2001; AGU Chapman Conference on Abrupt Climate Change – 2009, Columbus (USA). Prof. Paliwal was the Convener of the General Symposium – Hydrogeology and Topical Symposium – Geohazards in the 33rd International Geological Congress, Oslo (Norway), and Chaired 8 Sessions in it. He published several research papers in Journals of National and International repute and edited two books: The Indian Precambran (1998, reviewed by renowned geologist Prof. B.F. Windley, Precambrian Research, Elsevier) and Geological Evolution of Northwestern India (1999).
