Vijay Veer

Dr Vijay Veer (b. 1st Jan., 1956) is a renowned defence Scientist who is well-known for his contributions to insect ecology, taxonomy and medical entomology. He has developed many products and technologies for the benefit of the armed forces and for civil as spin-off. He has developed the first indigenous long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN called Defender Net), which offers protection from vectors of malaria, Japanese encephalitis, dengue, filariasis and other insect-borne diseases. His studies on pests of defence importance have led to the development of a highly effective a mosquito repellent, the DEPA (Diethyl Phenyl Acetamide), besides an array of other highly useful pest control products like Wool Care (for wool fabric protection), Ratox (for rodents), Roachtox (for cockroaches) and ovitraps (for mosquitoes). He has also contributed immensely towards our understanding on forest pests, thrips, dermestid beetles and tabanid flies and has described many new insect genera and species.  He has 26 patents, 9 books, several book chapters and over 177 research publications in national and international journals. He was a member of GFAST, a DRDO think-tank, representing Life Sciences. He was the Director of Defence Research Laboratory (DRL) inTezpur during 2012-15. The DRL, under his leadership, has successfully developed an array of products and technologies including Dentrap, Toxmos,Capsispray (chilli spray for self-defence), Capsigrenade (chilli grenade for mob dispersal) and DrlPure (water purification systems for removing iron, arsenic, fluoride and manganese from water). Dr Vijay Veer has also made significant contributions in development of Biotank-cum-reed bed biotoilet which is a most ecofriendly, appropriate and affordable solution for open defecation problem and human night soil management. This technology is also a potential source of energy solution.Currently, he is actively working on lure & kill based new generation technology for control of insect pests and molecular taxonomy.  Dr Vijay Veer is a fellow and members of many prestigious national and international societies and recipient of several awards including DRDO technology spin-off award and DRL technology award.
