The Little Rann of Kachchh situated in Kachchh Gujarat housed the Wild Ass Sanctuary. This salt desert-wetland ecosystem is unique and is dotted with about 74 elevated plateaus or islands, locally called ‘bets’. These islands have a richer floral diversity including indigenous plants like Suaeda spp., Salvadora persica, Capparis decidua, Calotropis procera, Tamarix sp., Aeluropus lagopoides, Cressa cretica, Sporobolus spp., Prosopis Cineraria, etc although now Prosopis juliflora, colonized the islands and fringes both . Research trials were laid to find out suitable plant species as fodder source inside WAS. Research trial was laid with S.persica on black silty clay at Kordha, Sami Range in Patan, Gujarat in July 2007 with . Control, Wheat Husk, FYM, FYM + WH and FYM + Urea (20g/plant) treatments. It maintained very high survival (91.6 %) afier four years facing the extemely harsh conditions of high salinity, heat stress after two consecutive summers (2009 & 2010) and one drought year (2009) and eratic monsoon afterwards. Treatments positively influenced the biomass yield and all the treatments recorded significantly (p-0.00) higher biomass yield as compared to control. T5 was the best treatment with 7.13 kg yield which is significantly higher than all other treatments except T3 (6.18 kg) for green biomass.
