The paper deals with 156 species (including 3 species of fern and 1 species of gymnosperm) of wild plants of Sonitpur district of Assam used for food by local inhabitants both tribals and non tribals of the area. Part(s) of plants used as food has been categorised and enumerated accordingly. The generic and specific names of the plants in each category have been arranged in alphabetic order. The enumerated plant species are assigned with family names followed by vernacular names (as far as possible) and also provide with exact spot of collection, collector’s name and field number of collection.

An account is given on 77 taxa of wild edible plants used by tribal and rural people of Saurashtra. The tribal and rural people of Saurashtra have a fair knowledge of plants and their uses.The wild edible plants have served as supplement diet for tribal and rural people apart from main diet, during working hours and field trips. The tribes interrogated were Maldhari (Rabari), Bharwad, Aahir, Koli, Vaghri, Bhil and Kangsia of Saurashtra region.

A first hand ethnobotanical account of 33 plant species (3 Pteridophytes and 30 Angiosperms) known among the Halam tribe of Assam and Tripura is presented. Altogether 48 types of uses have been noted, of which 28, 15 and 5 are of medicinal, food items and other uses respectively.

A total of 62 herbal methods of treating nine common ailments of cattle are described from the two coastal districts of Karnataka, viz., the Dakshina Kannada and the Uttara Kannada, based on an ethnobotanical field study. Sixty four species of local plants are used in these methods. A comparison revealed that some of the plants are used for common purposes in veterinary and human medicine, in the region. Vernacular names of a few plants, such as Antidesma menasu and Dregea volubilis are indicative of their medicinal uses.

A survey was carried out during 1994-2000 in forest areas and plains of Andhra Pradesh for information on wild edible plants and personal interviews were conducted with various tribals and local villagers. A total of 419 wild species belonging to 100 families are used for edible purpose, of which 157 species are fruits, 160 species leaves, 38 spp. tender shoots and shoot tips, 37 spp. stem and root tubers, 27 spp. seeds and grains, 8 whole plant, 15 flowers and flower buds, 1 radicle, seedlings, 2 gums, 3 tender buds, 2 bulbils. These plants are used in normal period or in times of scarcity

This paper deals with women and child health of Meitei communities of Manipur State and includes 36 plants belonging to 25 families. They used some commonly available medicinal plants as a traditional medicine for various diseases and ailments. The details of preparation and use of folk medicines, having herbal origin, collected from the people have been presented in this paper. Traditional knowledge systems and cultural practices, which are very popular, are discussed. An integrated study of these common diseases has a wider understanding of the conceptual context needed for characterization of their therapeutic resources. The active principles present in these plants, if scientifically analyzed and properly used, may prove to be useful for human welfare by way of controlling popularization explosion. The folk medicines recorded here are very efficacious and free from side effects.

Meitei community of Manipur State used some commonly available medicinal plants as a traditionally popular medicine for various diseases and ailments. Thus, an integrated study of these common diseases has a wider understanding of the conceptual context needed for the characterization of their therapeutic resources. This paper deals with the first-aid remedies of the Meitei community and includes 33 plants belonging to 21 families. Their botanical name, local name, English name, family, parts used and mode of application are discussed.

A survey programme on edible flowers found naturally in the valley districts of Manipur was conducted during the period Jan. 2006 – Mar. 2007. Sixty three (63) species of edible flowers pertaining to 51 genera and 34 families were collected. Among them, 34 are available in the markets having economic value and 29 plants are non – marketable. Vernacular names along with their mode of uses are incorporated. Flowering calendar and their marketable values in Manipur are also described in the present paper
