Land degradation challenges the
ability of land to support life, thereby threatening ecosystems, agricultural
productivity, and the well-being and livelihoods of millions of people,
particularly in vulnerable dryland regions. The integration of Sustainable Land
Management (SLM) practices, including soil conservation, water management,
agroforestry, and reforestation, in eco-restoration programmes will facilitate
the restoration of degraded lands, improve agricultural yields, and enhance the
resilience of ecosystems. This edited book will serve as a valuable
compilation, offering a comprehensive understanding of the important concepts
of sustainable land management, degraded land restoration, and land degradation
neutrality. It also provides insights into the role of moisture conservation
and indig- enous vegetation in reviving degraded lands; digital tools for soil
mapping; traditional and biotechnological methods for securing productivity; as
well as management practices such as microbial interventions and termite
control. Furthermore, it brings together success stories of effective
restoration strategies for degraded lands, including sand dune stabilization,
restoration of mined areas, revegetation of saline-sodic soils, and other
degraded landscapes.
