Many Textbooks have been Published which have included a Chapter or two on living gymnosperms, with perhaps a brief mention of some fossil forms. Likewise, there are several textbooks of palaeobotany which describe the numerous fossil members of the group. However, there has been no textbooks since 1934 that are devoted entirely to the gymnosperms and which give equal emphasis to both living and fossil members. During this interval a great many remarkable discoveries have been made which have Profoundly altered our interpretation of the group. Within the limits of 50,000 words, however, it is difficult to do justice to such a large and fascinating assemblage of plants. So much condensation is necessary that some of the more controversial issues cannot be given the full consideration that they deserve. To compensate for this, there is and extensive bibliography that will enable the reader to follow up those aspects that interest him.
