Survey and observation was carried out in remote villages in east coast districts of Pudukkottai and Ramanathapuram in Tamilnadu, India. Information revealed that there are many plant species traditionally used by the villagers. From these 50 species belonging to 40 genera and 26 families of medicinally important plants were identified and their uses were described in this article. Among them, Azadirachta indica, Jatropha curcas, Vitex negundo, Tamarindus indica, Tridax procumbens, Moringa oleifera, Erythrina indica and Sesbania grandiflora are some of the most useful medicinal plants in their day to day life.

The genus Caldesia Parl. is represented by thre species in India - C. grandis Samuel., C.oligococca (F.v. Muell) Buch. and C. parnassi folia (Bassi ex L.) Parl. The specimen from Lower Bengal is quite distinct from the above mentioned species, though allied to C. grandis Samuel. and C. parnassi folia (Bassi ex L.) Parl.,and deserves a distinct specific recognition. A palynotaxonomical account is presented in the text.

The new species Globba rahmanii Yusuf (Zingiberaceae) sp. nov. from Bangladesh is described and illustrated. The species grows in shady moist hill slopes at high altitude, 1200 m, in Chittagong and Hill Tracts districts of Bangladesh. Diagnostic morphological characters from closely related taxa are discussed.

The present paper highlights the occurrence of Soliva anthemifolia (Juss.) R.Br. as a new generic record to the flora of Himachal Pradesh collected from Pong dam wetland area of district Kangra (H.P.). This species has been found hitherto unknown to the flora of Himachal Pradesh. Notes on its morphological characters, habit and habitat are given.
