The Himalayan and Tarai-Bhabhar region of Uttarkahand is treasure of rich bio-diversity. In its lap it rears a number of medicinal plants. Many plants have great economic potential as dye and colour yielding plants; insecticidal and insect repellant plants as well as fiber yielding plants. The present paper deals with the world's most interesting and economically important plants yielding bast (stem) and leaf fibers. Summary from ethno-medico-botanical surveys of Uttarakhand by authors and relevant records about bast and leaf fibers having potential for textile, cordage and rope industry is also being presented in the paper. Many important bast and leaf fibers of other parts of globe or their akin can be grown in Uttarakhand. Their in-situ and ex-situ conservation and utilization for textile, cordage and rope industry shall produce eco-friendly materials and will also benefit the poor masses of the state. Besides this may exotic species can be also be grown in Uttarakhand.
